Blackwell Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Fast Facts for Medical Practice
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Science Inc (June, 2002)
Authors: Mary A. Herring and Molly M. Roberts
Average review score:

Lee Lipsenthal, MD
This book serves as a usefull in office guide for quick reference on alternative therapies. I find it useful for myself as well as my patients.

Tremendous resource for busy clinicians
There are a growing number of books on Complementary / Alternative Medicine (CAM) on the shelves, and a reliable resource on CAM therapies is imperative for conventional Western medical doctors as 50% or more of their patients are exploring these potentially helpful / potentially harmful therapies. This book distinguishes itself from the pack by providing the 30,000 foot view of each practice buoyed by bullet points highlighting the essential information a clinician needs to know to advise patients. This is a wonderful resource for busy clinicians who have only a few minutes of spare time to devote to counseling patients on CAM. I would recommend this book to any physician or other health care provider who sees patients; such a book should be provided to medical students and / or residents at the start of their training.

Excellent Guide for Both Professional and Lay Population
This is an informative and very readable guide to medical modalities currently used in lieu (or more frequently, in tandem) to treat many medical conditions. This book provides information on basic concepts of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), including political and economic issues. More than a dozen modalities are reviewed, including acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis and homeopathy. In addition, more contemporary interventions such as aroma and music therapies, therapeutic touch and guided imagery are explained. The approach is straight-forward; with each topic written by a specialist in the field. Authors (most are physicians; but several are nurses with extensive experience in the field of particular study) describe each topic; it's history, indications and hopeful outcomes and (in effort to assure a balanced review) limitations of treatment. Certification and licensing requirements are also addressed; with a sampling of nationwide hospitals and clinics providing CAM programs provided. This book is an excellent tool for both the professional and layperson seeking to understand alternative treatments and their effective integration with more tradition medical care.

A Book of Hope for the Storms of Life : Healing Words for Troubled Times (The Hope Collection)

book of hope for the storms of life
How can one thank an author they have never met face to face that has helped you get through a storm of life? While volunteering at Ground Zero as a Red Cross nurse, I was given this book of hope while I was mentally overloaded and feeling everyones pain in a real physical way. This book soothes the soul and if one will let it, it can start the healing process. I have brought out this small book many times as the wounds keep opening. I have found peace, and comfort.I recommend this book to be bought and given to any that are going through any kind of a personal "storm" whether it be emotional, physical, or spiritual.
As you give this gift, whisper a prayer for the miracles that will take place. Thank you Cecil Kemp for the healing words. I am writing this with tears in my eyes and cheecks as I think of my time at ground zero and being introduced with your book of healing. May you go with God.

A Book Of Hope For The Storms Of Life
My son and the author of this book, wrote this book to help give me comfort after my husband and Cecil, Jr.'s dad passed away. I was going through a hard time coping with the loss of my husband of 49 years. Not only did this book help me understand God has a plan for our life, but in death he helps us to understand by learning to trust in Him. We will have storms in our life, but there is hope. This book was inspirational.

A Book Of Hope For The Storms Of Life
Cecil Kemp, Jr. was a student of mine. After reading this book, I felt the information contained in it was invaluable. Cecil Kemp, Jr. is an excellent author, who relates well to others in coping with the trials of life.

Books That Changed the World
Published in Mass Market Paperback by New American Library (June, 1992)
Author: Robert B. Downs
Average review score:

Truly Outstanding. Good for a Lifetime of Reading.
I bought this book used from a library, along with a dozen others, a decade ago without much thought of what I was buying. Wow! I ended up with a lifetime of excellent reading. I've since had this book at my bedside, off and on, for the last ten years. So much excellent information is packed into this book that you can keep coming back to it and learning the most important writings of civilization.

This book summarizes the works for you. With just a little reading you can say something like, "What Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity did was radically change our perspective of time and space, and matter and energy. He showed that all motion is relative, and that the velocity of light is independent of the motion of its source. The implications are profound. To illustrate..."

Or, "What Socrates means by his definition of love, as written in Plato's Symposium, is that love is the pursuit of the beautiful; a desire for the immortal though reproduction. This, at its highest state, is manifested in a generalized love of universal beauty - beautiful souls, thoughts, laws, institutions and the immortal afterlife."

Everyone needs to read these works, and here is a condensed way to do it. It's a small investment in your education.

This book is a great primer of the classics!
I recently had the pleasure of taking a class at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, MO that used the Downs book as a textbook for the class! At that time, I had not read, nor even heard of many of the works Downs discussed. However, after reading his insightful summaries on these classics of political, social and economic history, I felt I owed it to myself to pick up the full length versions and devour them!

A must-read for every book lover.
I have been reading an average of 2 books a month. Yet I throw most of them away after reading. This is one of a few books I keep in my library. And it is the third time I bought it because every time someone borrow the book, I never got it back. Books That Changed The World summarizes the influences of the great books to the way we believe in things, some of which we take it for granted now. Things like the solar system, gravitational force. I hardly give a five-star to any book reviews, but this one well deserves it.

Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (January, 1999)
Authors: Ruth A. Lawrence and Robert M. Lawrence

Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

Excellent Reference for Medical Professionals and Mothers
This is an amazing text that answers almost every question the reader or a patient can bring to the table. Easy to read with good references. This is a must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a medical professional this book has been an excellent reference when treating lactating women. Definitely 5 stars!

Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a Registered Dietitian and have promoted breastfeeding to women for years. It wasn't until I became a breastfeeding mother that I wanted to be more informed on the subject. This book provides the how and why on specific benefits of lactation. If you do not have a medical background, be aware that there is a great deal of medical language. I am very pleased with my purchase.

A Bridge Less Traveled, Twice Visited
Published in Paperback by Badger Hill Press (06 April, 2000)
Authors: Robert Andersen and Rhonda Tucker
Average review score:

If I could give it 6 stars, I would
I knew from the moment I received this book I knew I was going to enjoy it. Rhonda's story took me on a much-needed journey into the life of relationship conflicts, after all, most adoptee's have difficulty in relationships. However the theme throughout remains clear--everything worthwhile is difficult. Robert and Rhonda are soul mates and the way they write about each other is breathtaking and honorable. The way they describe how their respective relinquishment affected their lives--especially their relationships--was brave, intimate, and necessary. As an adoptee and fellow author I felt a part of their journey, cheering them on all the way. I consider this book a masterpiece on the affect adoption has on adult relationships and especially how to persevere when the going gets tough.

Kasey Hamner, M.S., adoptee and author of "Whose Child?"

An Excellent Book
This is another excellent though difficult book on the subject of adoption, like Robert Anderson's other title Second Choice: Growing up Adopted. Both were very useful to this adoptee.

It is difficult in two ways. It may unsettle adoptees reading it who have not considered the adoption issues raised. That is good. That is why it is valuable.

It is also difficult in its introduction of a private language and definition of terms to describe the effects of relinquishment by the birth mother and the transference that results; terms such as ghost kingdom, land of denial, free territory. Thankfully there is a page of definitions. Page 314. It is a good starting point.

I feel that my trauma from adoption was not as severe, pervasive and all-encompassing in my life as it was for the authors. I also feel a suspicion that I delude myself. To paraphrase Clifton Fadiman, this book is a tool for self-discovery. 'It will simply help you to change your interior life ...'

Robert Anderson finds insights in dealing with adoption issues from helping those with Post Traumatic Stress disorder.

The authors tell an extremely personal story in vivid and disturbing terms, courageously exposing their feelings and relationship. Bertrand Russell said about being blackguarded for his beliefs over his appointment as a New York college professor " 'to withdraw' ... would certainly have been more prudent as far as my personal interests are concerned, and a great deal pleasanter. ...it would also, in my judgement, have been cowardly and selfish". I feel that the authors have been similarly courageous through their willingness to expose their feelings, write this book and so aid other adoptees.

I feel that Robert Anderson and Rhonda Tucker deserve the thanks of adoptees and heartily recommend this book.

Addresses important internal issues
Reading your book evokes the same emotional unrest one experiences with a serious contemplation of death. Neither is a feel good experience but both would be useful to most people. The very discord evoked by such an examination is an indicator that there are important internal issues unresolved and in immediate need of attention. In my mind, I compare the emotional trauma of such an inquiry to the process of birth. Both are traumatic but once done are the beginning of a new life. If nothing else was accomplished by the writing of this book, it's creation required that you both complete that difficult journey. Having suffered together through the birth of the book, I like to think that you both are now ready to live the new and better life you have made for yourselves. Enjoy!

Brimfield : The Collector's Paradise
Published in Paperback by Brimfield Publishers (15 April, 1996)
Author: Robert E. Brown
Average review score:

As a Collector, I enjoyed every single page!
I read the book prior to my first buying trip to Brimfield. Mr.Brown passed on some interesting history on the shows. Also, the assorted chapters revealed something of interest in almost all aspects of the flea market. I even had the pleasure of meeting the famous "lady in the white hat!" If you love antique shows as much as I do, you will enjoy this book.

A "Must Read" for the antique collector and flea market fan!
If you've ever wondered what the famed "Brimfield flea markets" are all about - now you can find out. Mr. Brown uses a compilation of newsworthy articles and human interest chapters to unveil the mystery surrounding the fields of the tiny Massachusetts town. Each May, July and September the rural village is transformed into a world-renown marketplace, and Mr. Brown is located in the center of it all. A book worth reading.

The book tells about the shows and how they came to be.
Full of photos, quotes, commentary and good writing, this book is a simple pleasure for everyone interested in flea markets. Dubbed the grandaddy of all markets, Brimfield just keeps getting bigger and better. I've been there and I know, but thanks to Mr. Brown's book, readers everywhere can realize what the hoopla in Brimfield is all about. RECOMMENDED READING *****

Brother of Sleep

Go an buy!
I looked into it at a friends. Then I startet reading and was hooked! I finished it the next morning. It is one of the best books i've ever read! So I read it again, and again, ...

confusion of senses
this book is in my opinion a book of the category "the parfum" from patrick süskind, a praise of the senses. it s a story of high talented young man which goes, against all odds, his way of musical carreer... without performances in big operas or concert halls, but with a never heard perfection in harmony, a divine like artist who is going to confuse his "simple" world around. it is written in a never seen quantity of neverheard words, in the search of trying to transform this divine harmonies into words. ...a word opera...

The passion of the unborn heart....
Reading the first sentence tells you what will be at the end of the final paragraph, and yet....passion in between those pages is unmatched by any pen. A must for outcasts, atheists, religious zealots and musicians....for everyone who holds a flame of any kind....poets and artistes to the hard of heart. You will be in tears.

Carbuying 101: How to Buy a Car With the Change in Your Ashtray
Published in Paperback by Rainbow Books, Inc. (October, 1997)
Author: Robert M. Blazak
Average review score:

A Must Read Before Buying Your Next Car (New or Used)!
Although Robert Blazak's "Carbuying 101" did not actually allow me to buy a car with the change in my ashtray, it did save me a significant amount of money and frustration. Blazak walks his readers through the entire car buying process from finding a reliable car to closing the deal at a great price. Based on his experience in the auto industry, Blazak exposes the tricks of the trade used by car dealers to get their customers to sign on the dotted line and to spend more than necessary on all the extras. Readers of "Carbuying 101" will learn:

-The best time of the year, week, and day to shop for a car.
-What charges are negotiable and what charges are fixed.
-How to identify when they are being manipulated by a sales person and how to best respond.
-What information to look for on the title and V.I.N. number.
-Why many dealers make more from their financing office than from the price of their cars.
-And many other strategies for how to maintain control and avoid spending more than necessary.

This easy and fun to read book will make an excellent addition to anyone's personal financial library.

Carbuying 101 How to Buy a Car with the change in your ashtr
I am so glad that I got this book! It was the best thing I have ever done to prepare myself to buy a car. I followed the instructions per the book and everything that Bob Blazak stated the dealers would do, they tried to do. I saved thousands, by following the guidelines that Bob Blazak laid out. This book is a very easy read, I have already recomended it to several of my friends. I also called Bob Blazak and spoke to him personally and he was very helpful, Thanks Bob!

Best of the Best
I bought this book after looking at several of the plethora of books on this subject. If you are looking for a book that tells it like it is with a very succint presentation & a logical flow; is a fast easy & enjoyable read, but you will keep it for reference too, this is it. I kick myself for loaning it out and forgetting to whom I loaned it. I've looked for it on the shelves at local dealers and have been told it's out of print. Amazon still lists it though. If you're looking for the fastest way to level the playing field in the world of car buying, this book is the needle in the haystack. I'm going to buy more than one copy this time.

Bobby Jones on Golf
Published in Paperback by Sleeping Bear Press (April, 1997)
Authors: Sidney L. Matthew, Robert Tyre Jones, and Bobby Jones
Average review score:

One of the Best Books on Golf
I have played at golf since high school but never took the time to learn to play well. After years of duffing around the course I decided to learn to properly play the game. I began taking lessons from a highly recommended Houston PGA professional instructor and I began reading golf instruction books. I've been working on my golf, now, for 1 1/2 years. Progress is slow but substantial.

This book, BOBBY JONES ON GOLF, is one of the best instructional books available.

Over the last 1 1/2 years I've read twenty or more golf instructional books. I have found that many of the newer books, written by famous current PGA players, really aren't that good.

This book is overwhelming in the amount of information it contains. Bobby Jones, clearly, simply, explains the body movements required to produce a correct, repeatable golf swing. He does this in such a way that the reader gains insight and understanding into the golf swing no other instructional book offers.

The book also clearly discusses swing tempo and rhythm, essential to a good golf swing.

The section of putting is rather brief but gives insight and clarity to the "art" of putting.

Although this is not the only instructional book I would recommend, I consider it the best single instruction book on golf. The amount of information, the clarity of instruction and the depth of insight contained in this book are unsurpassed by any other golf instruction book available. Additionally, Bobby Jones' writing style possesses an exceptional level of refinement, intelligence and clarity.

The Holy Grail of Golf Books
One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never got to see Bobby Jones play tournament golf. He retired from the game early, too early for a man of his immense talent; and a few years before I traveled across the country to see tournament play.

I can only go by his unmatched amateur record and old grainy 16-millimeter film stock to grasp the greatness of Bobby Jones. Jones had a great swing...Very controlled, impeccable balance/ coordination, unbelievable tempo and rhythm. Pure ballstriking. Pure golf.

In his book, "Bobby Jones on Golf", Jones really gets to the spirit of the game. This is a great book on the idiosyncrasies, nuances, technicalities, and philosophies of the game of golf. If you read carefully and take his advice seriously, I believe you will become a better player. I can't guarantee this, but there is no reason why a beginner can't shoot in the 80's within the first year of playing. If you do the reading and practice the fundamentals; after 3 years of playing on a regular basis (at least 3 to 4 times a week) you should be shooting in the 70's.

This book is a very easy and compelling read. I think you will really enjoy Jone's prose. It's Jone's prose that makes this an enjoyable reading experience. It's by no means flowery or pretentious, but understated and distinguished. Much like reading a Jane Austen novel; it feels like Jones is actually speaking directly to you. And this is the best way to learn about something very complicated; to have the narrator / author personalize his language by using parables, analogies, and personal stories to make it easier for the reader to understand the complicated material.

Another important note: There are hardly any illustrations and no photographs in this book. There doesn't need to be either because Jones does such a great job in his explantions that his words paint pictures. I was glad that he didn't have to resort to any photos; it would have distracted from his impeccable teachings.

I highly recommend this book whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Not only will you learn from a golfing master, but you will have a new appreciation for the greatest game on earth. Along with this book, I also recommend the reading of Ben Hogan's, "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf", Mickey Wright's "Swing the Wright Way", and Harvey Penick's, "The Little Red Book".

Bobby Jones on Golf
"A golf swing is graceful, not because it is made so, but because it is correct." Only Bobby Jones offers nearly poetic writing while tackling the ever so complex act of striking a golf ball, and playing the game.

Mr. Jones' book is without a doubt the best about playing the game of golf. Ben Hogan's Modern Fundamentals is a close second. The difference? Mr. Jones discusses the game. Mr. Hogan discusses the swing.

Beginners and high-handicappers should chuck all their golf magazines and golf-tip books. These only bring about tension and poor results. Bobby Jones on Golf will raise any interested reader's game to a level that goes beyond how many knuckels should be visible or the position of the pinky toe; all this while using the english language as well as he used his mashie.

A must read if you want to be a competitive golfer.
